Subject: original vs remaster
With no disrespect meant to the person who did this remaster, after just a cursory listen I feel that the original version of these files do a far better job of masking the flaws (tape noise, clicks, etc) while highlighting Elliott's voice and guitar. I've owned the original of this show for many years, and never really had a problem with the somewhat bass-heavy, muffled sound. When I discovered the remaster, I started by getting the VBR files. To my ears there was something wrong with the sound, which I figured to be poor compression. So I then got the FLACs and found the same problem. The main issue is that there is often a very high pitched whiny sound in the background which makes it really difficult for me to appreciate any of the benefits of the remaster. Perhaps the person who did the work could speak to what they were trying to achieve and why they feel it was a success. It's possible I have missed it....

In closing I just want to say that I hope my comments are taken as one person's opinion and not viewed as a final verdict. I love the fact that all this Elliott Smith material is available to the world, and that fans are out there striving to improve the quality of the listening experience. I do not mean to discourage anyone from trying this is the future or hurt any feelings.

Peace.
